Minimum wage in Morocco in 2026: SMIG vs SMAG explained
When a client and a worker agree on a price, the same question comes up: is it fair, and is it above the legal minimum? Morocco does not have one minimum wage but two: the SMIG for non-agricultural work and the SMAG for farming. This guide explains the difference in plain language, with worked examples and how Khedma uses both when tasks are posted and offers are made.
What is the SMIG?
The SMIG (Salaire Minimum Interprofessionnel Garanti) is calculated per hour and applies to industry, commerce, services and the liberal professions. After the 2026 revision it stands at 17.92 dirhams per hour. Because legal working time outside agriculture is 44 hours a week, roughly 191 hours a month, the matching gross monthly pay comes to around 3,400 dirhams.
What is the SMAG?
The SMAG (Salaire Minimum Agricole Garanti) is calculated per day and covers farm work: harvesting, irrigation, herding and general work on a farm. In 2026 it is 97.44 dirhams per day. Agriculture has its own regime because the work differs: seasonal hours, daily pay and peaks at harvest time.
Quick comparison
| SMIG | SMAG | |
|---|---|---|
| Sector | Non-agricultural | Agriculture |
| Unit | Hour | Day |
| 2026 amount | 17.92 MAD | 97.44 MAD |
Worked examples
- A 5-hour furniture move: minimum 5 × 17.92 = 89.60 dirhams. Any offer below that falls under the floor.
- A full day of harvesting: minimum 97.44 dirhams per day, whatever the number of hours actually worked.
- A per-task job such as painting a room: estimate the hours first. For 10 hours the floor is 179.20 dirhams, and a fair price will be higher once materials and travel are included.
How Khedma applies these floors
When a task is posted in an agricultural category, the platform checks that the price does not fall below the SMAG. For non-agricultural tasks it checks the SMIG according to the pay unit (hour, day or task). The amounts are managed from the admin side and change as soon as a new decree is published, with no app update needed. Most importantly, the worker receives the full agreed base wage: platform fees are calculated on top and never deducted from it.
The hourly SMIG (17.92 dirhams) took effect on 1 January 2026 and the daily SMAG (97.44 dirhams) on 1 April 2026, under decree no. 2.25.983. The Labour Code (art. 184) sets normal working time outside agriculture at 44 hours a week or 2,288 hours a year.
