Paying safely in Morocco: cash, receipts, invoices and what to keep
Most disputes between client and worker are not about the work but about payment: "I received nothing", "I paid you everything". The fix is simple and nearly free: a clear agreement before, a clear payment after, and a written trace of what happened.
Before the work
- Write down the amount and its unit (hour, day, job) and who buys the materials, in a message or in the app.
- Fix when payment happens: at the end, daily on a long job, or a small advance to buy materials.
- Avoid paying everything up front to someone you do not know.
When paying in cash
Cash is common and accepted in Morocco, but leaves no trace. To protect your rights: count the money in front of both parties and ask for or write a simple receipt with the date, amount, the job and both signatures, or a confirmation message. A text such as "I received 600 dirhams for painting the living room" is enough in many cases.
Receipt or invoice: what is the difference?
| Document | What it proves | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Receipt | That a sum was paid and received | Small jobs and cash |
| Invoice | The detail of work, price, date and parties | Larger or professional jobs |
Once a task is completed on Khedma you can get a PDF invoice showing what was paid: the agreed base wage, then the fees calculated on top, on the client's side. The worker gets the whole agreed amount; platform fees are never deducted.
What to keep
- The messages containing the agreement on price and date.
- The receipt, invoice or a screenshot of the payment confirmation.
- Before-and-after photos for larger jobs.
- Receipts for materials bought by either side.
If one side refuses
First try to settle it calmly and show the messages. If that fails, open a dispute in the app so the team can review it with your messages and documents. For unpaid wages you can contact the labour inspectorate in your city. Keeping proof is what gives you strength in all these cases.
